Akeneo keeps to product data and sells capabilities around the PIM as products or add-ons, such as Supplier Data Manager, Activation, PX Insights and, since 2026, PricingHUB. Pimcore puts PIM, MDM, DAM, a DXP/CMS, a customer data platform and a commerce framework on one data model, with several features reserved for its Enterprise Edition.

02 · How they differData model and governance
Akeneo organises products into families of attributes, with variants, associations and reference entities, and ties collaboration and governance features to its Advanced and Premium packages. Pimcore builds classes in a visual editor, with inheritance, variants as lightweight children and a classification store, and lists the Workflow Designer and Data Quality Management in its Enterprise Edition.
How products, variants and relationships are modelled, and how each platform keeps data complete and approved. This decides how much of your catalogue fits without workarounds.

Akeneo sells channel activation as a product of its own, which it says reaches 500+ retailers and marketplaces, and lists commerce connector apps as add-ons. Pimcore feeds channels through a native Productsup integration, which it says reaches 2,500+ channels, and has its own commerce framework, with connectors to platforms such as Shopify coming from partners.
How product content leaves the PIM: to your own webshop, to marketplaces and retailers, and to commerce platforms. If the number of channels is your bottleneck, this factor weighs more than the editing screens.

Both have agents in the platform and MCP access for outside AI tools. Akeneo ships its Data Architect Agent and Agentic Ziggy and extracts supplier data from images and PDFs with AI, while Pimcore's Agent SDK and Agent Bundle are in beta and AI extraction of supplier data comes from a partner app, LemonMind's openProd.

Both are built on PHP and Symfony, with REST and GraphQL APIs. Akeneo runs as SaaS on Google Cloud and offers SAP accelerators for SAP Integration Suite, while Pimcore runs self-hosted or as a PaaS on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure, is extended with Composer bundles and relies on partner connectors for SAP S/4HANA.

Pimcore publishes yearly prices for its Professional and Enterprise editions and its PaaS packages, as a flat fee per edition, and its Community Edition is under the POCL licence, which replaced GPLv3 with version 2025.1. Akeneo shows an entry point for its smallest package, keeps the other two quote only and releases its Community Edition under the OSL-3.0 licence.
How each vendor packages its offer and what moves the price. Compare offers over three to five years, including modules, connectors, partner work and your own team, not on the first-year licence.

Pimcore states 170+ solution partners in Global, Strategic, Platinum, Gold and Silver tiers, who sell extensions and connectors through the Pimcore Store.

Akeneo and Pimcore share a lot of their DNA: both are built on PHP and Symfony, both have open-source roots, and both offer a native DAM, GraphQL and REST APIs, agents and MCP access for outside AI tools. The real differences show up in scope, in how each is hosted and licensed, and in how much of the platform your own team or partner builds and runs.
Akeneo's Product Cloud suits teams that want a vendor-run SaaS focused on product content, with packages to start from and products such as supplier onboarding, Activation and PX Insights to add as they grow. Pimcore's single data model suits teams that want product, customer and content data in one platform, hosted where they choose and extended by their own developers or partners. Neither profile matters unless it answers a requirement you can name.

What is the main difference between Akeneo and Pimcore?

Can you self-host Akeneo or Pimcore?
Pimcore sells Professional and Enterprise as self-hosted licences, on premises or in a private cloud, and also offers a PaaS on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure with 24/7 operations by Pimcore. Akeneo still releases its open-source Community Edition, which you can host yourself. Support for the self-hosted Akeneo Enterprise Edition 7 ended on 30 September 2026, after which Enterprise customers move to SaaS.
How do the AI features of Akeneo and Pimcore compare?
Both have agents in the platform and support MCP, so outside AI tools can read and write product data. Akeneo released its Data Architect Agent in July 2025 and Agentic Ziggy, which coordinates specialised agents, in July 2026, and has extracted product data from images and PDFs with AI since July 2025. Pimcore's Agent SDK has been in beta since April 2026, its MCP support became final in version 2026.3, and AI extraction of supplier data comes from LemonMind's openProd, a partner app in the Pimcore Store. Release cycles are short on both sides, so test them on your own products.
Which one fits when you also manage customer or supplier data?
Pimcore manages customer, supplier and location data as well as products in the same platform, and adds a DXP/CMS and a customer data platform. Akeneo's Product Cloud covers product data only, with no customer, supplier or location domains. If product content is the whole scope, this difference matters less, so decide first which domains belong in the project.
How do you choose between Akeneo and Pimcore?
Write down your requirements first, including who will host and run the platform. Then run a scripted demo in which both vendors model your own products, import a real supplier file and publish to one of your channels.
